AWD across the fleet, with one exception

Every vehicle in our fleet has all-wheel drive except the Nissan Sentra. The vast majority of our vehicles have snow tires. Tell us where you are headed and confirm the tires on your reserved vehicle when planning a mountain trip.

AWD helps with traction when accelerating, but snowy and icy roads still require lower speeds and more stopping distance. Vehicle equipment does not guarantee safe travel in every condition.

Bring the skis and snowboards

Most of our SUVs can be equipped with a Yakima PowderHound 6 ski and snowboard rack. The rack carries up to 6 pairs of skis or 4 snowboards, depending on gear size.

Request your rack before the trip so we can confirm vehicle compatibility, availability, and any add-on cost. Let us know how many skis or boards you are bringing, especially if your group uses wider equipment. Text Colorado Cruisers about a ski rack.

For product details, see Yakima’s PowderHound 6. Check that your gear is secured and allow for the extra roof height before driving into garages.

Check your route and the current requirements

Use COtrip for closures, road conditions, and alerts before leaving and before the return drive. Build in extra time for winter traffic and weather, especially on the day you fly home.

AWD does not exempt a vehicle from traction or chain requirements. Follow posted restrictions and review CDOT’s current passenger-vehicle traction and chain guidance. Confirm any needed traction equipment with us in advance and use only equipment compatible with your rental. If the route is closed or conditions are unsafe, delay the drive.

A few habits for snowy roads

  • Clear snow and ice from the vehicle before you leave, including windows, lights, and the roof.
  • Slow down and leave extra space so you have more time to stop.
  • Accelerate, steer, and brake gently. Avoid abrupt changes on slippery roads.
  • Give snowplows space and follow road closures and posted restrictions.

Check the forecast as well as road conditions. Be willing to change plans when the weather changes.

Prepare before leaving the airport area

Set navigation while parked, check fuel or charge, and get familiar with the vehicle’s controls. For an EV, plan charging stops and confirm the return-charge requirement in your booking.

Bring warm layers, water, snacks, and a charged phone. Save the pickup and roadside-assistance instructions where you can access them without a signal. The rental guest guide keeps the common arrival and return reminders together.

Plan the mountain day and the return

Explore our Breckenridge and Vail guides, then leave breathing room for parking, loading gear, charging or refueling, and changing road conditions.
